How ADU's Can Help Reshape California's Housing Crisis

It’s no secret: California is experiencing a housing crisis. Nearly half of America’s renters are burdened by housing costs; 25% are severely burdened, spending more than half of their gross income on housing (JCHS). At these levels, it’s nearly impossible for families to afford post-rent, essential needs.

RPM Team believes that safe housing should be accessible to all; we started our firm to lower budgets and accelerate emergency construction efforts. As California’s situation continues to evolve, we are committed to partnering with clients in finding effective housing solutions - one of which is the Accessory Dwelling Unit.

Efficiency and Affordability

Accessory Dwelling Units (ADUs) are small homes located on the same lot as existing single or multi-family residences - a garage apartment, basement unit, or backyard cottage. 2019 legislation made it easier for homeowners to build ADUs on their properties and since then, California has already seen a steady increase in affordable housing options. By adding more units to the housing market, ADUs supply middle-tier rental opportunities. They are relatively inexpensive homes that can be built quickly – two important features for providing immediate help.

The Path of Least Resistance

When it comes to housing, the visual appearance of projects is the target people latch onto the most. The bigger and more obstructive a project looks, the more opposition it will face. ADUs are an effective and strategic solution, as they are relatively unnoticeable from the street and appear no different than your neighbor’s detached garage.

A Win-Win

ADUs offer monthly income for homeowners and add long-term value to their homes. Allowing homeowners to build more units on their existing property gives them the opportunity to supplement their income while providing a solution to the housing shortage - it’s a win-win.
