M Street Navigation Center

In May 2020, Kern County addressed the urgent need for additional shelter space by opening the M Street Navigation Center, a 150-bed facility near downtown Bakersfield. Constructed for $3.5 million—equating to approximately $23,000 per bed—the center provides a wide range of 24-hour services, including shelter, meals, medical and mental health care, pet services, and employment assistance.

In response to a 95% increase in homelessness since 2017, this center was established to not only provide immediate relief but also serve as a bridge to long-term supportive and affordable housing. Operated by the Community Action Partnership of Kern, it is a vital resource to help unsheltered individuals transition off the streets and toward stable housing solutions.
