We celebrated the beginning of construction on a new $5 million Navigation Center that will include a reception area, offices, drop-in center, isolation area, laundry facilities and dormitories for men, couples, and families to provide supportive services and housing pathways.
WHAT
A Navigation Center is a low threshold, high service, temporary shelter program for adults experiencing homelessness. The Navigation Center is one part of the Homelessness Response System and is an attractive service for people living unsheltered or in encampments.
The purpose of a Navigation Center is to access the quickest housing outcome possible for each individual and family seeking shelter. Guests will have 24/7 immediate access to services for mental/physical health, employment assistance, legal representation, family reunification strategies, peer support, and more in order to address the wide range of needs of our homeless population.
WHY
By building a Navigation Center, the Stockton Shelter for the Homeless is looking to respond to the homelessness crisis in partnership with the City of Stockton, San Joaquin County, and area nonprofits.
The Navigation Center guidelines break down some of the common barriers to people looking for help; including allowing pets, storage of personal belongings, increased privacy options, assigned beds/rooms, and the ability to come and go throughout the day. Clients who are seeking housing in addition to treatment for drug and alcohol dependency will not be turned away.
HOW
The Stockton Shelter for the Homeless Navigation Center is a true community investment, funded in part by City of Stockton, San Joaquin County, San Joaquin Continuum of Care, and Caltrans and in partnership with local business and nonprofits.
Students at University of the Pacifics’ Eberhardt School of Business developed the business plan for the Navigation Center after researching other navigation centers across the state. Utilizing former shipping containers, and with a history of efficiency of time and resources, RPM Team (Rapid Program Management™) will lead the engineering and construction efforts with a proposed budget of $5 million and completion date of January 2023.
