SAFE Camp Reno

Reno Safe Camp at Governor's Bowl Park

The SAFE Camp at the Nevada CARES Campus is a 51-unit tiny home village that compliments the 900-bed congregate shelter with a non-congregate section that allows a space for residents that are not comfortable living in a congregate section. RPM designed the site and development for this village. Each unit comes with their own locking door, HVAC, and air conditioning in a well-insulated unit that provides energy-efficient and comfortable spaces in the harsh Reno winter and summer climates. The SAFE Camp started as a camping tent site, but when RPM’s AOR reviewed the health implications of tent living in frigid environments, we recommended to the county to utilize a more robust housing system that is health conscious and dignified to give residents a sense of ownership. Community involvement and support systems are crucial for the success of such initiatives. The next phase of the program focuses on preparing residents for future living arrangements, aiming for greater independence. Pathways to permanent housing are emphasized, with case managers playing a key role in this transition. Adequate resources are essential to support individuals experiencing homelessness effectively. Efforts to assist individuals living on the streets and transition them into permanent housing are ongoing. Transitional housing is also a critical component of broader initiatives like Safe Camps, facilitating access to services and gradual movement towards permanent housing solutions.
