Southwest Wyoming Airport, Temporary Facility
Southwest Wyoming Regional Airport (RKS), located eight miles east of Rock Springs, serves as the primary gateway to Sweetwater County, Wyoming. The busy airport boffers essential air travel connectivity for the region. Its current capacity isn’t enough to meet today’s needs and is in the process of expanding and modernizing with a new terminal. In order to limit the expansion’s impact on the airport’s operations, a temporary space for the holding area, ticketing, bathrooms and baggage logistics are required.
Q&D construction, alongside RPM Team and the project’s modernization architect, Mead & Hunt, are working collaboratively to expand and modernize the airport while limiting disruption to the facility’s daily operations. RPM spearheaded with the temporary building program management by recommending a Sprung Structure to serve as the anchor build to encompass all of the temporary facility’s functions. Sprung was ultimately chosen because it allows for a rapid construction, easy permitting and can withstand the hard elements of a Wyoming winter. Additionally, the Sprung aesthetic aligns with the airport's needs, offering a clean, modern, and dignified passenger experience. The Sprung's temporary nature and flexibility allowed for a cost-effective financing solution. It is being rented from the manufacturer for a one-year term. RPM also activated the Sprung interior space with areas for ticketing, baggage handling, baggage screening, stuff quarters and bathrooms while specifying temporary wall systems and temporary bathroom systems. With a holistic approach, RPM provided a thoughtful solution for the RKS airport expansion and modernization project with a temporary Sprung building.
